A quick fun fact for you. Cockatiels are also known as ‘the Quarrion’ and in Western Australia they are commonly called the ‘Weiro’ bird (sometimes spelt Weero).
The cockatiels scientific name is ‘Nymphicus hollandicus’. Nymphicus is a genus unique to the Cockatiel and Hollandicus means ‘New Holland’, which is what Australia was referred to originally in 1644 by Abel Tasman.
Cockatiel means little cockatoo and with the little sulfur crest it’s easy to see how the humble parrot got it’s name. Recent genetic testing has also confirmed that the Cockatiel is most closely related to the cockatoo.
