A question that is often asked, and for very good reason is, can cockatiels live on their own.
Do cockatiels need a ‘mate’ in the aviary or cage to be healthy and/or happy?
The short answer is no, they do not need another bird with them to be happy and healthy. The longer and more nuanced answer is that they are very social birds. That means that if your pet cockatiel does not have a mate, you need to give them extra love and attention. You and your family become your bird’s flock.
They will survive on their own, but they will not thrive without interaction.
If thinking about buying a cockatiel as a pet, you will need to consider that your bird will want and need your attention each day. Cockatiels are extremely intelligent and interested in everything that is going on, so consider where you might put your birds cage. Somewhere with a bit of activity, perhaps where you can eat together and share your food (if on the safe foods list) and have a few conversations each day.
You will also want to get your cockatiel out of its cage each day too. That way they can have a fly around or snuggle up with you on whilst you read a book or watch some tv.
They want to play too and experience new toys and new foods from time to time. So consider what fun things you can do and what foods you can add to supplement their diet.
Hope that helps. Below is a few links that might be of interest to you.
